What does OpenTelemetry and Grafana consulting include?

We wire metrics, logs and traces with OpenTelemetry into an open-source stack read in Grafana, define 3 SLOs, test alerts until they fire and write a runbook. SRE / Observability Foundations covers that scope for USD 5,000, fixed, in 2 weeks. We work in your business hours and leave alerts and runbooks, so your own on-call can resolve incidents.

An alert that has never fired is an assumption. We trigger the failure on purpose and check that the alert arrives.

What you get, step by step

Everything in the package, in the order it lands. The price and the duration stay the same.

  1. Step 1: The signals

    Metrics, logs and traces wired.

  2. Step 2: The SLOs

    3 SLOs defined.

  3. Step 3: Alerts and runbook

Alerts tested until they fire, and a runbook.

  4. 2 weeks

What does the observability stack look like at a fintech SaaS platform?

For a fintech portfolio-analytics SaaS platform on AWS EKS, our work includes:

  • VictoriaMetrics, Loki, Tempo and Pyroscope for metrics, logs, traces and profiles, read together in Grafana.
  • From zero production alerts to 275 alerting rules, with alerts tested until they fire.
  • Alert noise down 70% in two weeks, measured as concurrently firing alerts from late September to the first week of October 2026.
  • The log store no longer recreated about three times a day by node consolidation, and autoscaling no longer dropping most report pods at once.

Frequently asked questions

What is OpenTelemetry?

OpenTelemetry is an open standard and set of tools for producing metrics, logs and traces from your code and sending them to the backend you choose.

Grafana or Datadog?

We do not rank vendors or quote their prices. We can show the open-source stack we ran at two companies, and one spend figure: about USD 5,000 a month less at the transportation company.

Which signals do you collect?

Metrics, logs, traces and profiles. At the fintech platform each has its own store: VictoriaMetrics, Loki, Tempo and Pyroscope, read together in Grafana.

How do you prove an alert works?

We trigger the failure condition on purpose and check the alert arrives. An alert that has never fired is an assumption, not a control.

How much did alert noise fall?

70% in two weeks at the fintech platform, measured as concurrently firing alerts from late September to the first week of October 2026. It is a short window, so we state it.

Do you provide on-call?

No. We work in your business hours and leave alerts and runbooks so your own on-call can resolve incidents.

How much does an observability setup cost?

SRE / Observability Foundations is USD 5,000, fixed price, 2 weeks: metrics, logs and traces wired, 3 SLOs defined, alerts tested until they fire, and a runbook.

Can I add SREs to my team by the hour?

Yes, with staff augmentation: USD 55–60 an hour for a Lead or Architect, 45–50 Senior, 35–40 Mid and 30 Junior, with a 6-month minimum.

What changed with OpenTelemetry at a US transportation services company?

Before, each cluster ran its own Grafana and Prometheus: 18 dashboards and no OpenTelemetry. Our platform team of 6, working there since December 2025, built:

  • OpenTelemetry collectors on all clusters.
  • A central Mimir, Loki, Tempo, Pyroscope and Grafana with SSO.
  • Real-user monitoring and OpenCost.
  • 135 dashboards, up from 18, including 34 per-service and DORA dashboards.
  • About USD 5,000 a month less in observability spend, from moving metrics and logs off a commercial APM.

Is open-source observability an alternative to a commercial APM such as Datadog?

It can be. OpenTelemetry collects the signals, and Mimir, Loki, Tempo and Grafana store and show them, so your telemetry is not tied to one vendor's agent. At the transportation company, moving metrics and logs off a commercial APM meant about USD 5,000 a month less in observability spend. Whether it fits you depends on who will run it. We make no price claim about any vendor.

On Google Cloud, telemetry goes through OpenTelemetry to Google Cloud, with a per-call cost ledger and 18 alert policies. Every production deploy is verified by image digest.
