A Backstage portal starts at USD 5,000 with Clouditive. IDP Foundations is a fixed price for 2 weeks: it sets up the platform, connects the services you choose in the kickoff and adds basic views such as the service and API catalog, deploy status, cost, image vulnerabilities and CI health. Hosting cost depends on your cloud, and we do not publish an estimate for it.

Is Backstage free?

Backstage is open source, so the software has no license fee. The cost is the engineering to set it up, connect services and maintain it, plus hosting.

How much does IDP Foundations cost?

USD 5,000, fixed price, 2 weeks.

How much does a Backstage engineer cost per hour?

Our published rates are USD 55–⁠60 an hour for a Lead or Architect, 45–⁠50 Senior, 35–⁠40 Mid and 30 Junior.

Fixed price or hourly?

Both exist. IDP Foundations and Discovery are fixed price. Staff augmentation is hourly with a 6-month minimum, and architect consulting is USD 4,480 a month.

Do you publish a hosting estimate?

No. It depends on your cloud, and we do not publish an estimate for it.

Backstage is open source, so the software has no license fee; the costs are the engineering to set it up, connect services and maintain plugins, plus the hosting. The first is priced above. The second is a question for your cloud bill.

Can we start small before committing for 6 months?

Yes. Any 2-week fixed-price package, such as IDP Foundations at USD 5,000, can come before a 6-month staff augmentation commitment.

Is building Backstage cheaper than buying a hosted portal?

We make no price claim about hosted portals. Compare the numbers on this page with the quote you get, and see the three questions on the Backstage page about who owns the code and hosting.

What happens after the minimum term?

After the 6-month minimum, staff augmentation continues with 30 days' notice.

Which of our prices apply to Backstage work?

Four ways to pay for Backstage work, all published:

  • IDP Foundations: USD 5,000, fixed, 2 weeks. Platform set up and built, the services you choose connected, basic views on top.
  • Architect consulting: USD 4,480 a month for 20 hours a week of an architect, who designs and builds with your team.
  • Discovery: USD 7,000, 1–⁠4 weeks. A roadmap with backlog, roles, critical changes and needs, ending with the build or buy decision.
  • Staff augmentation, per hour: Lead or Architect USD 55–⁠60, Senior 45–⁠50, Mid 35–⁠40, Junior 30. The minimum is 6 months, billed per hour worked.

What does a monthly Backstage team cost at our rates?

At 160 hours a month, a Senior costs USD 7,200–⁠8,000, a Mid USD 5,600–⁠6,400 and a Lead or Architect USD 8,800–⁠9,600, billed per hour worked with a 6-month minimum. An architect at 20 hours a week is USD 4,480 a month. IDP Foundations is USD 5,000 once, for 2 weeks. These are our prices, not a market average.

Over the 6-month minimum, one Senior at 160 hours a month comes to USD 43,200–⁠48,000.
